Business Style Essentials

Whether you work at a big energy company, marketing firm or are going to a networking event,  you are going to need some business style essentials in your closet. People often get the misconception that these have to be “stuffy” or boring. As long as they are classy, fit comfortably to your body and are professional, you can create many fashionable work outfits. Every day at work I tend to wear a combination of the following items below. I like to pair neutrals with a pop of print and flats for my everyday office look.

My business style rules

  • Dress for your body type: You know your body and what looks good and what does not on your body frame. Be conscious of this when you are out shopping. Certain clothes look better left on the mannequin, and not everyone will be able to pull off every trend.
  • Make sure clothes are clean and crisp: An inexpensive but freshly ironed outfit can look like a million bucks. It is all about being polished and put together. You don’t have to spend a ton of money to look professional and neat.
  • Classy is the original black: Always dress classy and professional in the work place. Please do not dress as if you were going to a bar or a club. No cleavage, short dresses/skirts or too high of heels. This is work and you can always take your cardigan off once you go to happy hour. In the meantime keep it classy and choose a simple cardigan, flats and a shift dress.
  • A smile is the best accessory: The key to a great outfit is a smile. It can complete your look and doesn’t cost anything. You will also seem more welcoming even if you did have to change your outfit twice because you spilled coffee on it running out the door 🙂

1. Shift Dress: The perfect work staple dress is the shift dress of course. It is a classy dress with a good length. The structure is crisp and gives it a professional look. The pleats and color are perfect from the office to happy hour after!

2. Striped Tote Bag: Every working girl needs a tote bag that she can throw her planner, iPad and lip gloss in. This striped tote bag is eye catching with the fun black and white stripes and added little bow.

3. Metallic Leather Flats: A cute pair of flats are my number one essential fashion staple for the work place. They can still be as cute as heels, but more comfortable and easy on your feet. I like all things metallic, and these give any outfit a subtle pop, without being too over the top.

4. Floral Cardigan: I wear cardigans almost every day to the office. They are great to throw on over a button down blouse in the summer or to layer in the fall. You can go with solid colors or a fun print like this one.

5. Pencil Skirt: The pencil skirt is the definition of business style. When most people think of pencil skirts they think of the black boring ones. This skirt is classy yet modern. The light color is great for the summer but transitions to the fall with the light wool fabric.

6. Signature Blouse: A button down blouse is a staple item that every working girl must have. It is such a classic look that will never go out of style. You can dress it up with a blazer for an interview, or with dark denim jeans on a casual Friday.

7. Planner: A planner is a must for the working girl. Where is she going to put all of her appointments, meetings and take notes? This leather bound planner is perfect to track all of your important information throughout the week.
