Captivate Workshop

Workshop: Captivate Workshop | Location: Tiny’s No. 5 | Photography Session: Courtney from Courtney Leigh Photography | Calligraphy Session: Whitney from Whit and Wonder | Painted Cookies: Miss J’s Sugar Cookies
This past weekend was very fun and creative as I attended my first calligraphy and photography workshop. It was hosted by one of my friends Courtney from Courtney Leigh Photography who I have known since I was little and shoots beautiful photos including my about me photos on my website. It was also hosted by Whitney from Whit and Wonder who does calligraphy/design and also designed my new logo for my blog which will be launching soon. This was their first workshop that they had put on, and it was more than a success!
The Captivate Workshop was put on at my favorite spot Tiny’s No. 5 in the back room. Can you say plenty of gorgeous natural light and wonderful décor! I knew from just walking in this room that it would be so fun and the girls leading it are oh so creative. It started off with Courtney giving some of her favorite photography tips talking about the basics of ISO/aperture/shutter speed on your DSLR. My mom always takes my blog photos and I normally adjust the settings. I have been wanting to learn more about shooting in manual. These tips helped out a lot, and I can’t wait to share with mom what I learned so we increase our picture quality even more. Everyone always has their i-phone with them so taking a picture on the fly is a must. I generally only carry my DSLR when I am shooting something for the blog. I learned you can shoot just as well with your phone if you have the right natural light, clean area and are open to a little styling 😉

Next Tiny’s brought in some lunch where we enjoyed great meat sandwiches. If you have not had their mint lemonade, I don’t know what they put in it but I think I drank about 3 glasses. I needed to fuel up for the next section which was calligraphy which I really needed to listen to. Whitney led this session where all of the supplies including paper, ink, nubs, pen holder and some calligraphy samples were at our table in the cutest little wood basket. We started on the basics of holding the pen, how to put the nubs on and where to get all of the good supplies. Next, was opening the ink and how to dip properly. I then spent a while just practicing with the motion and holding the pen. It is quite different from holding a regular pen or pencil, but was not as hard as I thought it would be. The one item I found was interesting and is going to take a lot more practice for me was putting more pressure when you are coming down from a letter and less pressure on the pen when you are writing in an upward motion. Whitney was able to come walk around and help us on a one-to-one basis. By the end of it I was able to learn how to connect letters and write little sayings that will come in handy on notecards. There is still a lot of practice I need to do because my handwriting is also known as scribbles, but practice makes perfect!

Then the infamous chocolate chip cookies from Tiny’s were brought out which are so yummy and sinful. Speaking of cookies, Courtney’s sister in law Jessie from Miss J’s Sugar Cookies supplied us some amazing cookies during the event. Not only are her cookies yummy, but they look so beautiful too. She hand paints on each of the cookies and I used her when she first started for an event last year and every time I see her stuff I am amazed. This workshop was just the right amount of people too where I was able to make new friends, but intimate enough that I could openly ask questions and have Courtney or Whitney come over and give me one-on-one help. I would highly recommend this workshop and I would love to go to another one just to get more practice and learn some more tips. You should check it out because even though this was the first one, they are planning more soon! Follow them on instagram for more info @captivateworkshop
