Domaine Carneros Style

This past week my mom and I made a trip to California for the first time for a mother daughter trip to the wine country. I had always wanted to go here for as long as I can remember because it looks beautiful and of course because I love wine. Every time my mom and I are together it is always a hoot. Between getting lost in the car to telling stories and enjoying great food we had a blast. After spending a full day at wineries we wanted to venture off to a different winery that was known for their sparkling wine! I knew after researching and seeing pictures of this winery that Domaine Carneros would be a great place, and it is absolutely stunning.

As soon as we were driving down the highway we could spot this magnificent building from afar. Then when we were walking up it reminded me of a beautiful castle. The other wineries we had visited were very traditional and I liked how this one was old charm, but far more elegant than any others I had been too. As soon as we walked up I could see several people sitting at tables with umbrellas up on the terrace being served samples of wine and enjoying themselves. We arrived at 11 am and I already loved the looks and feel of this place. We decided to do both a tour and tasting here, because who would not want to explore this beauty. I am a wine drinker, but by that I mean I know my wines and what I like, but am by no means an expert. After spending a day here I learned quite a lot and about my favorite which is sparkling wine and what Domaine Carneros is known for. At first we started looking at the vines outside and exploring the property. I never knew how long it took for the vines to grow, how many pounds of grapes it takes to make a bottle, or that the drought has actually not affected the grapes in a bad way at all.

Then we went inside and got to explore how they make everything and how long it takes. What I liked the most is that unlike a lot of the wineries, Domaine Carneros is indeed organic which makes it that much more appealing. Next up was my favorite part which was the tasting of course. I learned how to properly hold and open a sparkling wine bottle and also how to not make the cork pop, which will take practice! After toasting we had our first sample and it was so crisp and delicious. You can really taste the flavors more when you have the 2nd sip to get the full effect. We learned the bottling process and explored the areas a little more after trying another sparkling wine. Then it was on to the reds for a little food pairing too. We were able to sit down take in some cheese and learn more about the other great selling wine which was the pinot noir.

My favorite thing about visiting this winery was how knowledgeable our guide was. He was very funny and gave me so much hidden information that I will be using for a very long time. The sparkling wine and pinot noirs were also very nice. When I was in Napa I either liked the setting of one vineyard and the wine of a different one, but here I really liked both! I haven’t been to Europe yet, but felt like this was just a tiny glimpse of what it would be like in France. If you haven’t been to Napa you need to plan a trip now, and if you have make sure to put Domaine Carneros on your list if you haven’t been. I can’t wait to go back and just sit outside at the tables and enjoy my bubbly!
