Weddings, weddings, weddings they are one of my most favorite things to talk about and go to of course. If you didn’t know I graduated from college in Hospitality with an emphasis in event planning and worked in wedding/event planning for a little bit when I graduated. Weddings are such a great timeless event in my opinion, and I am all about celebrating with your friends and family no matter the distance. I have discussed being in a wedding in my bridesmaid post and what to wear to a fall wedding and finally in this post what to wear to a beach wedding. As you know last month I went to Cabo for one of my high school friends’s beach wedding and it was pretty amazing. It was my first time to a destination wedding, and I hope it will not be my last. Honestly it was the most perfect wedding between the timing which was incredible, to the fun and everything in between. A destination wedding can sometimes be hard for a lot of the guests because they have to book a flight and hotel and normally can’t go for just a weekend there. I actually think that this is the best type of wedding because you can make a vacation out of it too which is even better. So many times we are already traveling for weddings anyways, so if a beach is involved it makes it that much more enjoyable. One thing that was always on my mind is what do I wear to a beach wedding?

I always say the first thing for attire when attending any type of wedding is to of course read the invitation first. Normally they say on there if it is semi-formal, cocktail attire, black-tie optional, beach formal or other variations. Then after I look at this I would talk to some of my friends or google options to get a feel of what you are wearing and depending on how close you are to the bride, you can also text her what you and your date are thinking of wearing. Since this was my first time to a beach wedding I knew that I wanted to wear a long flowy dress. I think wearing a short cocktail dress or a long flowy maxi is appropriate for a beach wedding. Funny thing is I actually wore my short cocktail dress because this long dress did not come in on time, but it still worked. I do prefer the longer dress to a shorter one for a beach wedding though. One thing that makes a difference between those 2 styles and whether it is appropriate for a beach wedding, is the color and the fabric. Since this wedding was around 5:30 and the sun was still out and it was on a beach, I wanted to do a brighter color that gave it that kind of tropical vibe. Of course I also wanted to do lighter fabrics and having some with texture is even better. This dress had a fun subtle print on it too which would be perfect for a beach wedding. As far as shoes go for beach weddings I would not wear a stiletto. A lot of girls wore wedges and I wore a chunky block heel. 9 times out of 10 you are going to be asked to take off your shoes and they will have a basket for your shoes while you are at the ceremony. The shoes are only worn really for the reception afterwards. I would keep your hair flowy and down as the wind on beaches can do a lot of damage if you try to make it too formal. As far as what men wear to a beach wedding, I would suggest just like women to wear lighter fabrics in lighter colors. Now your guy does not have to go out and buy something brand new, but if he only has all black suits then yes you actually would probably want to buy something. Linen shirts or khaki are 2 fabrics that I personally like and think would be good to wear. I wouldn’t wear a tie and I wouldn’t wear a tux for sure. If your man has khakis, a lighter color button down shirt, and a light tan or navy color blazer that would be fine in my opinion. As far as the shoe option I would go with something like a classic loafer for a guy since it is going to be a lot of trouble going from the beach to the reception if they are in socks and dress shoes. No matter what you buy just think of functionality, have fun, and try to find something you can wear again. Because we all know that half of those prom dresses and old bridesmaid dresses we can’t 🙂 If you ever have any questions please email them to me at info@bnbstyling.com
