Houston Travel Guide

Today I wanted to share something else other than fashion and focus on a little travel guide or should I say my favorite picks for this great city of Houston, TX. I have lived in Houston my whole life other than in college and I love this city. Not only is it the 4th largest city, the job opportunities are amazing here, you get the most bang for your buck, major oil and gas city, great food, and so much culture you wander why I haven’t left here. There is always so much to do here and I find myself exploring little areas all the time and finding hidden treasures that I never knew existed. My favorite thing to do is try a new restaurant. The culture and food here is probably one of the most diverse cities out of the country and there are endless options to try. I could go to a new restaurant every day and still not go to all of them here. Houston is a great place to come and visit and with so many different options to do I have put my favorite recommendations below.

To Stay
  • The Houstonian-This hotel is like no other in Houston. It is situated in the Galleria area but you feel like you have gone to a secluded area since it is on 18 wooded acres. The wooded areas make for a serene escape yet you are still 5 minutes from all of the best shopping and restaurants in the city. Not to mention that the spa here is one of the best all around. I highly recommend this hotel!

To Do
  • Shopping: Houston has some pretty good shopping which is a must in a big city like this. We have the Galleria which has a million stores and a ton of high end designers featuring Christian Louboutin which will be opening soon. There is also several areas around Houston including the Heights and Westheimer for antiques and cute little boutiques.
  • Biscuit: This is the cutest little store for all of your home and personal needs. Whenever I need a gift for someone I immediately head here. They carry Jonathan Adler, Kate Spade and so much more. All of their home décor pieces are always so unique and they have the best supply of candles. The wall on the outside of the building is probably one of the most picture taken wall in Houston too.
  • Cheeky Vintage: This little gem is my favorite. They have the best vintage clothes and accessories I have ever seen. A lot of my favorite wardrobe pieces have come from here and I am obsessed with them. Whenever you wear vintage you are truly making a statement and no one else is going to be wearing the same thing as you. If you want unique pieces head here. FYI, the sweetest people ever work  here and you will truly feel the Southern hospitality.
  • Sports Game – Houston has pretty dang good sports teams for a big city. Between the Dynamos, Astros, Rockets and Texans it is going to be a fun time watching a game no matter what time of year you come. The Astros games are fun in the summer to eat hot dogs and on Friday nights they have a fireworks show after the game. My 2 favorite sports are basketball and football though. I love going to the Rockets games because they are so fun but there is something so great about football tailgate and especially my crush JJ Watt that is just 10 times better.
  • Festivals/Museums-Just like there is a funny food holiday almost every time you turn around, the same goes for festivals that occur here in Houston. The Greek festival and Beer festival are always great festivals. I love going to the Heights in the summer and in the winter for White Linen Nights in the Heights and Lights in the Heights. It is a big block party where everyone dresses up in white in the summer and in the winter the  houses are all lit up. There are also great museums here that I have been going to ever since I was a kid. My favorite being the butterfly exhibit at the Museum of Natural Science

To Eat
  • Hugos-Houston loves Mexican food and this restaurant staple proves that. It is a favorite among people here and I think their food is one of the most authentic out there. The patio outside is to die for and the food is so fresh. I always judge a Mexican restaurant on its salsa and chips and this place I would give a thumbs up!
  • Tiny Boxwoods-One of my favorite restaurants no matter if it is day or night time. I love sitting outside and people watching and drinking mimosas for brunch or sitting inside with a glass of champagne and a flat bread pizza. It is right next to a plant nursery so the grounds are oh so cute. Also Tiny’s has the BEST chocolate chip cookies in Houston so you have to have one of course.
  • Brasserie 19-This is the girls night restaurant to go to. My favorite item to order as an appetizer which sometimes just becomes a meal is a meat and cheese board here. I absolutely love cheese and any type I am down for. They always have great wines here and it is the cutest little place. Speaking of people watching this is the place to do it. It is situated in the River Oaks shopping center next to some of my favorite other little gems and reminds me of a Parisian café.
  • Down House-I love brunch and in Houston everyone does too! On Saturdays and Sundays brunch can sometimes be a couple hour ordeal so going to a place with amazing food and good bloody marys is a necessity. Here they have great American food and the chicken and waffles are amazing. That great that I honestly have never ordered anything else on the menu. When you ask for the bloody marys make sure you get the big ol’ one complete with my favorite bacon!
  • Crave Cupcakes-If you have a sweet tooth this is the place to go. I have tried cupcakes all the time when I have traveled and I still can’t compare them to these. I always get the red velvet cupcake and  it does not disappoint. One of my big concerns when getting cupcakes is that it can’t be dry and this one is the perfect texture and sweetness all in one.
To Drink
  • Benjy’s-This is my favorite happy hour spot that I have been coming to for years. You can’t beat the prices for drinks and the food menu during happy hour. There are 2 locations here in Houston with both having the comfy little bar area upstairs. The brussel sprouts are to die for that you  have to order even if you are just drinking some wine.
  • La Grange-This is a fairly new place here but has become my favorite new place to hang out on a Friday or Saturday night for drinks. A lot of the bars here are now spending about 10 minutes on your drink and you are truly getting the best concoction that a mixologist can make and I love that. Between tequila, wine and anything in between you can be sure to get it here. The décor is too cute with the outdoor patios and the unique light fixtures.
  • Local Pour-I would have to say I come here for a drink out then any other place. It is right next to Brasserie 19 so if I go there for dinner I just swing by here afterwards. My drink of choice is the chardonnay or prosecco when I come here. The bands on the weekend nights is what is my favorite part. Listening to live music in a classic place with wine sounds like my perfect place. I usually end up dancing the night away and coming back the next weekend.
Houston has so much to offer and I am glad I get to call this city my home. These are just some of my favorite recommendations because if I named all of them it would be way too long. As you can see this city has so much to offer and always something to do. H-town really has it all down!

This was so fun to read because 1. I recognize so much if it and 2. I recognize very little of it…haha exactly why we all love Houston, so many great things. I better if every one made a list like this there would be little that overlaps. I miss Houston a lot. Every time I go back there are new things everywhere! I lived in scoring branch area and went to memorial High school, you??

Thank you so much Veronica! I know it is so crazy because you have those places that are staples that have been around forever and then you have those that are brand new and cute and popping up everywhere! I grew up in the Kingwood area.
