I can’t believe we are in the 2nd week of December already. I am so ready for the holidays, you have no idea! It has been a busy last couple of weeks with work, personal, and getting ready for a fun Colorado trip as well. One thing that I have been trying to do is prep for the holidays. I have had my apartment decorated since before Thanksgiving, but James and I went and picked out the real Christmas tree last weekend which was a lot of fun. I have been getting in the spirit of all things Christmas lately, and I think it is because I am well prepared to actually enjoy the holidays early this time with my family and friends. Since this year has been anything but normal for a lot of people, more people have gotten into the spirit of the holidays and have decorated even more than ever. There is something about this time of year that is so magical. These prep tips that I have used for the holidays below have helped me stay organized, and be able to enjoy this time of the year. I hope that they do for you as well!

Prep for the Holidays Tips

  • Take Inventory of Your Gift Wrapping Supplies: Don’t go to Target and just pick up about 20 bags that cost $5 each because you think that they are cute and that you need to have them. Chances are you still have wrapping paper from last year that you didn’t use, and plenty of Christmas bags that friends/family got you for gifts. Start with inventorying what you have first before you buy anything. This will help you determine how may bows you need to buy for gifts, how many rolls of tape you have, etc. If you already have all of your gifts bought, then this is even better. A great way to do this is to order online. There are a lot of cute supplies online or just at your favorite store like Target that you can have shipped to you.
  • Set Aside Your Holiday Outfits: It might sound silly or too much planning to already set your holiday outfits out in advance, but this is key. Doing an inventory of certain pieces that you will wear for Christmas dinner or New Years Eve is my favorite tip to do. You will want to see what sequins/sparkle pieces you have to put outfits together for this festive time of year.
  • Use Visa Gift Cards Towards Gift Budget: I always get a Visa gift card back after I buy my years worth of contacts each year. I use this Visa gift card towards my Christmas gift budget. This helps to not have to spend as much during the month of November/December. It also helps with your budget, and not going overboard spending for one person. These can be accepted anywhere, and are so great to be able to use for situations like this.
  • Take a Day Off of Work to Wrap Gifts/Do Final Shopping: If you are able to take a day off of work in December to do any final shopping trips and/or spend time wrapping gifts, I would highly recommend it. I say take a day off so that you don’t have to take up your weekend doing this. It will also not be as busy during the week, which is always a plus and will get you more prepped.
  • Plan an Act of Kindness to Do: The best part of the holiday season is doing a random act of kindness to those that need it the most. Talk with your family on what you are going to do together to make these memories and put a smile on someone’s face in need. Planning ahead of time and marking this on your calendar or budgeting for this is key to make sure it gets completed.
  • Buy Your Baking Supplies & Non-Perishable Items Early: If you have a tradition of baking sugar cookies or having a certain dish for Christmas dinner and it is non-perishable, I would stock up on these items now. Baking supplies like sugar and flour you end up needing a lot of during the holidays, and these can sometimes fly off the shelves. Having these items in stock in your pantry are key. It also eliminates unnecessary trips to the grocery store that we all hate.
  • Wrap Your Presents When You Get Them: I was just watching Christmas Vacation a couple of nights ago and was wondering why they hide their presents in the attic. As soon as you get them in you should go ahead and wrap them and put them under the tree. If you just put them in a hiding place, you most likely will forget some and they are taking up space. It is always nice to see wrapped presents sitting nicely under a Christmas tree anyway.
  • Continue with Daily Cleaning Tasks: If you don’t have a system that consists of daily cleaning tasks, the holidays are a perfect time to start those. You want the holidays to not be chaotic and not have to think about cleaning as a stressful piece of your planning. You want this time to be smooth and your house clean as you will be entertaining and having presents, etc. The more of a cleaning routine the better!
  • Have Extra Supplies Handy: You want to have extra sets of lights at your fingertips if your lights on your tree go bad, plenty of sticky command hooks, nails and lots of tupperware. Having these on hand will save you a lot of time throughout the holidays. I always try to always have champagne/wine and some good cheese on hand during the weeks as well. You never know when you will need to host someone that might just do an impromptu drop-by.
  • Label and Have a Place for Everything: You want to label all of your boxes that have your decorations in them. This is so helpful when you pull them out every year and go to put them away after the holidays. I would also put even more labels on items within boxes too. You might not remember where you placed a certain decoration last year, and putting a label stating “Coffee-Table” will help you for the next year.

I hope you all are enjoying this great time with your family. These tips are some of my favorites that I use year over year. They should be able to help you out, and most of all let you truly enjoy this special time of year. Please share some of your favorite tips that you use too!
