Fredericksburg Travel Guide

This past weekend I went to Fredericksburg with my parents and had an absolute blast. I hadn’t been in about 6 years and forgot how charming this little town is. If you live in Houston or Dallas it is only about a 4 hour little day trip to get there, which isn’t bad at all. I didn’t realize how many wineries were in this town or the publicity it has received over the years. The last time I went was in the cooler months, so this time it was nice to go in the summer and see how it was during this time of year. We stayed 2 nights here which I think was the perfect timing for a little weekend getaway. I love little Texas towns because of the historic areas, little charm, and the Southern hospitality of course. You all remember my little stay in Nacogdoches, the downtown area of Fredericksburg kind of reminds me of that. Between shopping, outdoor music, and of course the wineries we had such a great time in this little charming town.

To Stay

There are not a whole lot of hotel options in this town. A lot of people choose to rent a house, Airbnb, or do a bed and breakfast. I have stayed at an Airbnb several times and like the openness and the amount of flexibility in these options. I think if you have a big group or are going for a bachelorette party, etc. this is a great option to do. We decided to do a hotel since my parents prefer having housekeeping daily and just enjoy the service of a hotel more overall.

  • Holiday Inn Express $$: We stayed at this hotel the first time we came here and then this past weekend as well. Even though it is a chain hotel I think it is very nice for a Holiday Inn Express. If you have kids their pool area is like a small water park. It is about a 2 minute drive to Main Street where all of the shopping is. You actually could walk if you wanted to. There is of course complimentary breakfast and our room was a suite and had a living and kitchen area. If you want a standard hotel I think this is one of the best ones in town.
  • Hoffman Haus $$: If you want a true bed and breakfast charm then I would recommend staying at this place. It has great reviews and the rooms look so cozy and everything is in a neutral palette. The exterior looks so cute as well, and the best part about this place is that they offer spa services too. What better way to unwind in the hill country than with a hot stone massage.
  • Airbnb $-$$$: There are so many options when it comes to staying at an Airbnb while in Fredericksburg. You can get a cute little cottage within walking distance to Main Street, or you can have a full house on 10 acres. I think this is the best option if you want to get a little bit more of a local flair during your trip with more room too.

To Eat

Since Fredericksburg is not that big there are not a ton of restaurants in the area. If you are staying in a house chances are you will be cooking some of your meals whether that is for breakfast or lunch. During the day we would just have something quick at one of the wineries that consisted mainly of some cheese and crackers, sorry not sorry on that great decision. There are also a lot of German restaurants since Fredericksburg has a lot of German background. We preferred to have the classic American dishes at the places we ate at.

  • Vaudeville: This was the cutest place I saw while walking on Main Street. I immediately was drawn to it by the pretty white building and the cute little bistro chairs that were outside. It is a little bistro that is New American and a place where you can feel extra chic while enjoying a glass of rose. They also have a little shop when you first walk in that has the most unique items. You have to go in there first and look at their amazing collection of coffee table books. I spotted the Veuve Clicquot book that I was obsessed with. This place is a must, even if you just enjoy a cocktail on the patio.
  • Otto’s: If you want a true authentic Fredericksburg meal then I would try Otto’s. It is a German bistro that locally sources all of their produce and meats. You can get anything from a wurst plate to foie gras at this restaurant. They even have Sunday brunch, which is always a win in my opinion. The inside and patio are also so adorable and will want to make you stay awhile.
  • The Treaty House: This is really a bar and cocktail lounge, but also has great food as well. We ate here on Saturday night when we realized we probably need to eat dinner and it was already 9 pm. Which by the way one thing to note is a lot of the restaurants close pretty early in Fredericksburg, like 9 pm at the latest! This restaurant is set in a pretty stone building and when you walk inside there are gorgeous chandeliers and even a piano player singing. It reminded me of a restaurant in Savannah we went to recently. Their cocktail list is extensive and you must try their charcuterie board and their fried shrimp.
  • Clear River Ice Cream: It wouldn’t really be a vacation if you didn’t stop at an ice cream shop right?! This place is an old fashioned ice cream parlor that has an extensive list of all flavors possible and they are cheap too! They have over 75 flavors ranging from a classic butter pecan to an amaretto peach which I got. This place takes you back in time especially if you enjoy your frozen treat in the upstairs eating area.
  • Hondo’s: I can’t say enough great things about this little restaurant. We went here for dinner, drinks, and live music on Sunday night. They have a huge menu where you can get anything from hamburgers, salads or even chicken fried steak. This restaurant even serves some peach margaritas which are pretty dang good. My favorite part about this place is the big patio with a stage that has live music almost every day. When we went there were 2 country singers that were amazing. I would highly recommend at least stopping by this iconic place.

To Do

Everyone knows of Fredericksburg for their great wineries on Highway 290. Even though that is a lot of why people make the trip out here, there is still so many other things to do in this fun hill country town including some shopping, museums, and a lot of peach tastings.

  • Shopping: This was one of the first things we did when we got into Fredericksburg. You have to just stroll down Main Street where you will come across all kinds of fun and unique shops. There are a lot of thrift type stores and some country style decor stores, so if that is your style then you will love it. I personally liked the knick knacks at Vaudeville like I mentioned above the best. There are also plenty of antique shops all along Main Street as well that were cute. You have to go into Rustlin Rob’s Gourmet Foods and sample all of the yummy dips, jams, and everything else you can imagine. If you live in Houston it is like the Nutcracker Market times a million. When we were leaving Fredericksburg we stopped at Magnolia Pearl which was the most unique store I have ever been into. The building and all of the decor in it looks like it is from the 1800’s. They have a very unique vintage style and soon they are going to be hosting concerts out back on this stage on their property.
  • National Museum of the Pacific War: If you are a history buff then this would be a unique thing to do for 1-2 hours to get out of the heat if you are going in the Summer. My dad has been here twice when we have come here and has enjoyed it. They are open daily and have lots of artifacts and galleries of some of World War II.
  • Get Some Peaches: Fredericksburg is known for their peaches and you will find more peach stands then you will find wineries here it seems like. They are everywhere, and for good reason because they are really good. At some orchards you can pick your own peaches, but we decided to go to Gold Orchards and got a dozen peaches and then saved some room for dessert. They are a 4th generation family run business and it is so neat seeing everyone peeling peaches by hand in the kitchen to make cobbler, homemade ice cream, or any other type of sweet dessert.
  • Experience the Wineries: Of course you wouldn’t want to leave Fredericksburg without trying some of the amazing wineries that they have to offer. Some of my favorite wines come from this area and it is nice to actually visit your favorite vineyards. We decided to take the 290 wine shuttle to the wineries which was easy and for us was like a private driver since we were the only ones ever on the bus. You can never go to all of the wineries in 1 day, but there are several which are my favorites below.

To Drink

Of course wine is the drink of choice in this part of the hill country. Between all of the wineries that they offer and the new ones that open every year, they got enough to visit and drink at. We did see a new brewery that looks like it is going to open later this year that will be a great new addition to all of the vineyards. My favorite part about going to my favorite wineries below is how each one is different and their wines are even more unique and diverse too. There is something so relaxing about having a glass of wine and enjoying the beautiful vineyard.

  • William Chris: This was the first winery we stopped at last weekend and it was definitely a smaller boutique feel kind of winery which I loved. We did a tasting since we had never been here before. It was highly rated by some of my readers to check it out and I am glad I did. The covered patio is great with the vineyards surrounding you and the wine of course was amazing too. My favorite was the merlot and the rose which I had to buy a bottle of.
  • Grape Creek: I love the wines here and the atmosphere. It has a very traditional Italy type vibe as fas as the outdoor seating. This is one of my favorite places to take pictures and of course always do some people watching. Inside is not as big as some of the other wineries for tastings, but we already knew what we wanted to drink when we got here. They also have a stand outside if you are just interested in ordering a glass of something. I would highly recommend just doing a tasting at maybe 1 or 2 wineries and then get a glass or better yet a bottle at the other places. My favorite here is the cuvee blanc which is a great all around white.
  • Barons Creek: This was the last vineyard that we came to on our trip and I loved the setting. It is housed in a pretty white Tuscany looking villa that has an amazing pond and patio outside. Their wines have won numerous awards from everything from rose to Tempranillo. We enjoyed a nice sangria when we were there and got to play some outdoor games which was a nice added touch.
  • Becker: A classic that I think is on everyone’s list when they come to Fredericksburg is this winery. They have been around for 20 years and really know what they are doing when it comes to wines. I love how big their tasting area is and you don’t have to wait a while either. When we went we got some great sausage and crackers with my favorite buttery chardonnay and enjoyed time spent on the huge covered patio. What is nice about Becker is that you can buy their wines at your local grocery store which makes it 10 times better.
