Spring Clean Your Closet

It’s that time of year finally where it is not cold anymore (at least here in Houston) and there are so many fun shopping pieces in the stores. Lately I have been wanting to go shopping for so many items but I need to find some space in my closet first. I tend to keep a lot of items thinking “I might wear this eventually,” even though I have not worn it in the last year. This is why a good “detox” of your closet is an essential part of spring cleaning. I know we dread getting to it but afterwards it will be so much more organized and allow for more clothes!

De-Clutter: This is the first and foremost step of cleaning up any area. A closet can be the spot where we just throw some things to hide them temporarily. We might have shopping bags still in there that we need to get rid of or hangers or shoes that have been put out of space. Tidying up this area is the first step to evaluating your closet.

Toss: I hate saying this but it is oh so true. If you have not worn a piece in about a year and it is not a fun “costume” piece that you are saving then I would toss it. Chances are if you haven’t worn it in a year there are chances you won’t be wearing it this year. I always struggle with this cleaning tip but it will help with those clothes that are just gathering dust.

Organize by Type: Organization is key to keeping your closet looking fresh and up to date. Color coding your closet is the best way to achieve this look and makes it easier to put an outfit together if it is broken down into colors. I also like to go a step farther and within the colors organize by tanks, short sleeve, long sleeve, sweater and jacket. Since it is now in the warmer months my coats will be all grouped together and not as accessible as my tanks would be. This is also true for my shoes as well. I will have all my nude pumps together and then my tennis shoes in another area.

Get Matching Hangers: This is the one piece of advice that people normally do not take when cleaning their closet, but I think it makes the world of difference. If your hangers are all matching it just makes the closet look more put together. A lot of the plastic hangers and of course the hangers you get at the dry cleaners do not look the best and are flimsy. Grabbing some velvet grip hangers or even the wooden ones are a better option that you can also keep for years. These are also better on your clothes and won’t stretch them out, but instead keep the shape.

Have Fun with Display: Don’t forget that for any girly girl that likes to shop this is her sanctuary and where a lot of her time and money have gone. Spring cleaning does not have to be boring and completely dull. I like to use decorative boxes to store items in my closet. Also using your heels as a display item on top of books or strategically placing your handbags is a nice added touch.

I hope some of these tips will help as you tackle your spring cleaning.  The closet can be a big chore at first but should be clean, fun and full of all of your favorite things 🙂
